Bio

Malia is a PhD student in the Biological Engineering section of ABE with a specialty in Ecological Engineering. Originally from Lakewood, Colorado, she holds a BA in Biochemistry and Art History from Colorado College, an MPhil in Art History from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, and an MS in Agricultural Engineering from UIUC. Her MS research centered on characterizing the chemical products formed by the thermochemical conversion of swine manure to crude oil (developed by ABE-UIUC). Currently, she is working on describing the microbial ecology of biofilters to remove nitrates from tile drain water. Outside the lab, she is greatly involved in music theatre and has performed in numerous shows in Champaign-Urbana, Colorado, and Scotland.
